Newsletter – December 2018

Bill Nenno — S.A.L. Finance Officer
The Sons of the American Legion held its monthly meeting Nov. 20. In attendance were Tillman Smith, Bob Nellis, Donnie Polstin and Bill Nenno.

Membership
As with all of the American Legion Families, membership is our current big push. Our total membership for 2018 was 95 members. Currently, 42 members have paid their 2019 dues.

REMINDER: AS ALWAYS ALL MEMBERS MUST PAY THEIR 2019 MEMBERSHIP DUES BY DECEMBER 31. YOUR CURRENT KEY CARD WILL NO LONGER WORK THE DOOR AFTER THAT DATE AND NO NEW KEY CARDS WILL BE ISSUED TO ANYONE WITHOUT A 2019 MEMBERSHIP CARD.

Also, please remember it takes time and effort to renew a card. Those who wait until December 31 may find themselves without a viable card for a couple of days. Procrastination has its liabilities.

There are two main ways to pay your 2019 membership dues. Membership can be paid by mailing your dues care of:

SAL
POB 1073
Elephant Butte, New Mexico 87935-1O73

The second method is to pay your dues to any bartender. They will put your renewal/application in the SAL envelope behind the bar. Renewals should be acted upon within a week and your new membership card will also be left in the SAL envelope. Membership cards will NOT BE MAILED unless specifically requested. Just FYI, about a dozen cards are currently sitting in the envelope, many have been there for over a month, so if you have paid your 2019 dues and not received your card ask the bartender to check the envelope.

New Mexico State Veterans Home
The New Mexico State Veterans Home has a “donation challenge” to buy a new bingo system. The system is fairly expensive and they are asking for donations of $750. The SAL responded to this challenge by donating $750.

Hamilton Museum/Vietnam Wall Memorial
The Vietnam Wall Memorial at the Hamilton Museum was recently remodeled and the dedication was held on Saturday, November 10. This coincided with the annual Veterans Day Car Show. American Legion Riders from around the state, including many of our own Post 44 Legion Riders of which I am a member, gathered on the north end of town and rode with a police escort through town en masse to the wall. Our grateful thanks to all the local businessmen and veterans groups involved in that effort.

Make-a-Wish / Luminaria walk
The Sal donated $100 to the Make-a-Wish annual Christmas Luminiria Walk. In addition, we donated $100 to American Legion Post 44 to help defray costs of the food given away.

Sierra Santa
The SAL donated $200 to Sierra Santa. Sierra Santa is locally sponsored by the Lions Club. The event takes place in the Sierra County Fair Barn. In addition to Santa giving away toys to hundreds of local youths, there are a large number of food baskets for the needy. .

Just FYI, while I am at it let me give a very special thanks to Bullock’s. Butch Bullock is a member of the SAL. Bullock’s donates hundreds of canned goods and other groceries for the Sierra Santa food boxes. Bullocks donates to almost every local charity year-round. In addition to a host of local charities, they give ongoing donations to our own Care Packages. Bullock’s also gives the American Legion a discount on everything we purchase there. Bullock’s was also a large contributor to the Vietnam Wall Memorial remodeling. The next time you are in there let them know how much we appreciate their efforts and their support for veterans and local charities.

Deone Harty has finally made it back home. He has a ways to go but he is getting there. We wish him well. Keep up the good fight Deone.

Employee Christmas Bonuses
In another event near and dear to our hearts the post asked that we help pay for the employee Christmas bonuses. The SAL voted to donate $200 for the bonuses. Additionally we voted to give two drink chits to each employee as stocking stuffers. It’s a shame that we usually only say this at Christmas time, but THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

Next Meeting
There will be no December meeting. Our next meeting will be held Tuesday Jan 15, 2019 at 6:30 PM at the Post. The S.A.L. meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month and all are invited to attend.

As always, remember that organizations are not really organizations, they are just people. Help out when you can and when you see them, thank those that do help out and let’s all work together for the common good.

Thanks for supporting our Post, our Community and most of all — the Veteran.
