We currently have 82 members with a new member signing up this month. We can still reach our goal of 85 if we work at it.

Memorial Weekend

The SAL was active in the placing of the flags on the veterans grave sites at the old and new cemeteries on May 24. We participated in the Memorial Day services at the New and Old cemeteries, the Wall and Ralph Edwards Park for the floating of the reefs.

The SAL will be an active participant in Elephant Butte Flag day.

Elephant Butte Days

The SAL voted to obtain a booth at the event this year for the purpose of selling Bar-B-Que sandwiches and Hamburgers and Hot dogs. This will have to be a Family event to have enough personnel to run the booth. I think two or three people for three hours at a time would be enough. The SAL thinks this would be an excellent way to help the Legion in raising funds. This booth could also be used as an     opportunity to bring in new members. If we can’t get the proper help, we will donate the booth fund to Elephant Days.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held Tuesday June 17, 2014 at 6:30 PM at the Post. The S.A.L. meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month and all are invited to attend.

Election of officers

The new slate of officers was approved at our April meeting.  S.A.L officers take office immediately.  After seven years the mantle has been passed. Congratulations to Gene Hill who is now the S.A.L Commander.   I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who’ve helped me in my stewardship of the Post 44 SAL for the last seven years.  I could not have done it without support from everyone.  Speaking of which, let’s all get behind Gene and help him with all of the new ideas I’m sure he will bring to the office. Our new slate of officers will be:
Commander               = Gene Hill
First vice commander = Deon Harty
Adjutant                      = Donnie Polstin
Finance officer            = Bill Nenno
Sergeant At Arms       = Tillman Smith

Memorial Day Ceremony

Memorial Day is coming up and as always we will be putting flags on the graves at the new and old cemeteries.  Make sure you put this on your calendar.  We normally put out over 700 flags.  Last year we were a few flags short and so the S.A.L voted to donate $100 to purchase more graveside flags.

Fiesta Parade

Once again we will have a presence in the Fiesta Parade.  As with the last couple of years we will again be using golf carts.  These seem to have worked out very well and are well received.  They are also much easier to decorate.  So mark the date and wave at us as we go by.
