Sons of the American Legion – Commander Gene Hill
The Sons of the American Legion held its monthly meeting Oct. 18. In attendance were Billy Laswell, Tillman Smith, Bob Nellis, Donnie Polstin and Bill Nenno.

Membership
As with all of the American Legion Families, membership is our current big push. Our total membership for 2018 was 95 members. Currently, 25 members have paid their 2019 dues.

Early Bird Drawing
The early bird drawing was held and Shane Ross was the recipient of the free year membership. Congratulations Shane.

Truth or Consequences Schools
The Truth or Consequences school system has asked that materials and supplies be purchased and donated to needy children within the Truth or Consequences School System. The SAL donated $200 to purchase school supplies. Due to the inherent aversion of SAL members to shopping, a solution, with help of the Auxiliary, presented itself. To wit, the Auxiliary offered to do the shopping for the SAL. At the risk of sounding sexists, this gets the SAL off the hook and allows the Auxiliary to do two things that they really enjoy. First helping children and second shopping!! (Rim shot here). Thank you Auxiliary.

New Mexico State Veterans Home
The SAL donated $200 to the New Mexico State Veterans Home to be used by the residence in the canteen. In what can only be described as numeralogically symbolic, with no planning on my part, the check was written with the very next check in our check book – that check number was 1111. (Gasp here)

Child Welfare Fund
Child Welfare Fund is one of the main charities of the SAL nationwide. The recommended donation is $1.00 per SAL member and as always Post 44 SAL exceeded this with a $200 donation.

Just FYI, according to the SAL national website, “The American Legion has a proud tradition of supporting our nation’s youth. The organization was founded on the principle in 1919, when Children & Youth was declared one of the Legion’s four pillars.”

New Mexico Friends of Foster Children
We also voted to be a Bronze Sponsor ($100 donation) to New Mexico Friends of Foster Children. Locally this is handled by Teddy Dorland. They are putting on their Fourth Annual Southern New Mexico open on November 10 and 11th at the Bedroxx Bowling Center in Truth or Consequences.

Deon Harty
Deon Harty has been moved to assisted living, but is still struggling mighty with his health issues. We wish him well. Keep up the good fight Deon.

Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be held Tuesday Nov 20 at 6:30 PM at the Post. The S.A.L. meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month and all are invited to attend.

As always, remember that organizations are not really organizations, they are just people. Help out when you can and when you see them, thank those that do help out and let’s all work together for the common good.

Sons of the American Legion – Commander Gene Hill

Wrtten by Bill Nenno, Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.) Finance Officer, in commander’s absence.

The Sons of the American Legion held its monthly meeting Sept 18. In attendance were Billy Laswell, Tillman Smith, Bob Nellis and Bill Nenno.

Membership
As with all of the American Legion Families, membership is our current big push. Our total membership for 2018 was 95 members. Currently, 22 members have paid their 2019 dues. For those who pay your 2019 dues before our October 16 meeting your name will be entered into an early bird drawing. If your name is drawn your membership will be free. The early bird drawing is just one more reason to pay your 2019 membership ASAP. You can pay your $25.00 to any bartender or, until Commander Gene Hill gets back in October, to Bill Nenno. Your 2018 card will, as always, be good until December 31, but paying early helps the SAL. Besides, if you are like most of us you’ll be broke by Christmas.

Elephant Days Celebration
The American Legion Families celebrated Elephant Days by putting golf carts in the parade. They are always well received. Entering the parade is a great way to keep a visible profile and show our support for the local community.

American Legion Family 7th Annual Golf Tournament
The 7th Annual American Legion Family Golf Tournament was a huge success. Congratulations to head wrangler Bob Acres and his entire team. It is always a great fundraiser and this year was no exception and the SAL was happy to again be a Hole Sponsor. The hefty check that the SAL received as our portion of the profits was greatly appreciated.

Moose Golf Tournament
The S.A.L received a letter from the Loyal Order of Moose soliciting support for the Governor’s Cup Charity Golf Tournament. We voted to become a Hole Sponsor for $100 donation. We are happy to support our local Moose organization and help support all of the good work they do for the local community.

SCCA
The Sierra County Cancer Association always does good work locally. The SAL voted to become a Silver Sponsor by donating $250. The SAL is proud to help SCCA in their quest to help others. Please join them in their 2nd. Annual Fundraiser October 6 at the Elephant Butte RV Resort Events Center. They work hard for our community and deserve our support.
