Sons of the American Legion – Bill Nenno

The Sons of the American Legion Post 44 held its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan 15, 2013.In attendance were Gene Hill, Bob Nellis, Donnie Polstin, Deone Harty, Billy Laswell, Tillman Smith, and Bill Nenno.I would like to thank those in attendance and to make a personal plea for more S.A.L. members to get involved in the administration of our Sq.   Let me take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the SAL/Post a success. Most of the jobs that are performed to keep the SAL/Post running, and successful, are not glamorous nor do they carry a lot of recognition, so to all of my fellow “worker bees” congratulations on a good year. Your work does not go unnoticed, even if it often goes upraised.

Membership:  It seems like I have been harping on membership for months…. no wait, I actually have been. I guess it’s time for me to toot our horn. I received a letter from Detachment listing all of the American Legion S.A.L. Squadrons in the State of New Mexico. We are accredited with 60 cards received out of the 84 members that we carry on our roster. This is 71.43 percent of our target goal. We are fourth in terms of reaching our target goal. The three Squadrons that have a better percentage have 9, 14 and 13 members respectively. It’s probably a little easier for them to reach their target. This means that, of the larger Squadrons, we have the highest percentage of renewals. When the January transmittal goes in we will officially have 68 members, so our percentage will jump to 81%!!Congratulations to all the members who have paid their dues for 2013.We really do appreciate your support.

I would be remiss if I did not point out that we still have 16 members or 20% who have not renewed their membership. If it’s is an oversight, and your resolution to renew was lost in the shuffle that happens at the end of every year, let me suggest you renew as soon as possible. If not renewing was a conscious decision, I respectfully ask you to reconsider your decision. The need for recognition and the struggle to maintain veteran’s rights is ongoing. Help us do our part by keeping our numbers strong. Thank you.

A couple of things in the Detachment letter surprised me. Of the 30 S.A.L. Squadrons listed we are the eighth largest, with 84 members. Membership runs from a high of 240 for the Alameda Squadron (with the next 2 largest also Albuquerque Squadrons with 150 members each) to a low of 9 members listed for Las Cruces. Eleven of the 30 squadrons have fewer than 20 members while only five have triple digits. Statewide, total S.A.L membership is 1732.Currently, 46% of this 1732 have renewed their membership for 2013.All of this is apropos nothing, but I found it interesting.

Membership Dues: According to a missive I received from Department, during the 2013 Detachment Convention to be held February 8, 2013 there will be a resolution proposing a $2.00 increase in dues. It was voted that, regardless of how this resolution turns out, Post 44 S.A.L will absorb this increase and NOT increase our dues.

Finances: Gene Hill gave a financial report and I am pleased to announce that our finances are in good shape. If anyone ever wants to know exact numbers all you have to do is come to one of the meetings!! This information is public record at all of our meetings.

Recognition: We received thank you letters from the New Mexico State Veteran’s Home, the Sierra County Cancer Society, the Child Welfare Fund, Youth and Children for our December donations.

Post 44 Donation: Every year the S.A.L makes a donation to help defray administrating costs incurred by the Post. This includes stationary, photocopying, web site; etc. the S.A.L voted to donate $120.

9/11 Tribute Flag: Thanks to Donnie Polstin and Deone Harty for a special donation. They donated a plaque and 9/11 tribute flag to the post. The tribute flag has the names of every individual that died on that terrible day. Let us resolve to never forget their sacrifice and let this flag be our reminder.

S.A.L Dinner: Thanks again to Donnie Polstin and Deone Harty for offering to put on another dinner as a S.A.L fundraiser. Their enchilada dinner November 18 was a big success. Not to rest on their laurels, they have offered to put on another dinner. This one will be oriental sweet and sour. Tentatively this is scheduled for the first Saturday in March. Keep an eye out for this event on the calendar and let’s make it another great success. It is events like this that keep our post alive, fun and vibrant.

Flagpoles: After months of thwarted attempts, it would appear that we have re-established communication with our supplier of flagpoles and flags. The S.A.L voted to purchase another batch of each and they should be available in the next few weeks.

Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb.19, at 6:30 PM at the Post. The S.A.L. meetings are always held on the third Tuesday of the month and all are invited to attend.

As always, remember that organizations are not really organizations, they are just people. Help out when you can and when you see them, thank those that do help out and let’s all work together for the common good.

Thanks for supporting our club, our community and most of all —the veteran
