Calendar: Next Riders meeting will be on the first Tuesday of the month: August 5th at the Post, at 6:30pm. The next scheduled ride would be on July 9th. That will coincide with the NMALR state picnic at Elephant Butte State Park and second Saturday breakfast.

Scheduled Ride: The ride scheduled for the 7th of June was postponed until the following Monday due to inclement weather.

Unscheduled Ride
Last year OWW hosted a ride to Las Cruces to the veterans “tent city” at Mesilla Valley Community of Hope.
What most people don’t know is that there is an associated re-integration project called the “Oak Street Project”. The Oak Street facility consists of 22 apartments which are all filled at this point. Oak Street accepts both men and women and the project has been very successful, with a high rate of graduating residents.
Unfortunately, an affordable property usually doesn’t become available in upscale neighborhoods and this one is no exception.
An immediate concern is that there is a lot of traffic through the apartment breezeway(s) that seems to be associated with drug use and transactions between the houses on either side of the apartment complex. The resident veterans are continually finding paraphernalia and used syringes on the property and even in the beds of trucks. Night-time safety is a concern.
The residents have a pressing need to improve security designed to discourage this unwanted foot traffic. Accordingly, after a discussion amongst the attendees of the Tuesday evening social gathering, it was agreed Chapter 5 should make a ride to Las Cruces Wednesday morning to survey the project and assess the overall situation.
We did that and as a result have begun to take the necessary preliminary steps to alleviate the problems. This will be a fairly lengthy project and the next newsletter should see an update on our progress.
Our monthly meetings are held at Post 44 on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. – Feel free to drop in, guests are always welcome.

Finally, on Saturday, June 14th five Chapter 5 members took part in the Flag Day parade. Clarence Himes, a 98 year old WWII army veteran was the Grand Marshall of the parade that originated at Hodges Corner Restaurant and finished in the open area across from the Elephant Butte city offices on Water Ave.
