NMALR-OWW Visit to Veterans Home: Saturday, December 14th Chapter 5 members met a large contingent of New Mexico Legion Riders primarily from Grants, Albuquerque, Alamogordo and Silver City at the New Mexico State Veterans Home. This annual visit to the NMSVH by Legion Riders on behalf of Operation Wounded Warrior has been a special event since its inception in 2005.
This visit allows the Riders to add a personal touch to the generous donations OWW has received from thousands of people throughout the year. Those donations are generally made in recognition of, and appreciation for, the service our veterans have given.
This year contributions to OWW were used to purchase a shuffle board game to be placed in the recreation room.
In addition:
- OWW delivered a check in the amount of $1300 or $10 to be added to every residents “Canteen” account.
- Personally delivered handmade quilts & lap blankets to the residents in the residents own room.
- Riders visited with many of the residents in the dining area after the residents lunch.
- Donated many boxes of personal comfort items.

Afterwards Chapter 5 hosted the participating Riders at Post 44 for lunch. KT prepared her normal Friday night grill for them.
2013 Luminaria Walk: That same evening Chapter 5 partnered with the other members of the Post 44 legion family to host a campsite at the Luminaria Walk at Elephant Butte State Park. The event was held lakeside at the park. This annual event is sponsored by the Elephant Butte Chamber of Commerce to support the Make a Wish Foundation. Post 44 also makes a direct cash contribution to the event.
It was a beautiful evening as the weather was calm and relatively warm. The campsite was festively decorated with Christmas lights and abundant luminarias and a large bonfire. The Auxiliary baked pecan pie muffins and helped hand them out as a wonderful complement to the hot chocolate served by the Riders. Kathy Norton wore two hats as she served Sloppy Joes (that she and Liz Nellis had prepared) to the large crowd.
To add icing to the cake, Carolyn Druce hooked up the first Karaoke machine to appear at the Luminaria Walk and it was a huge success.
Unscheduled Ride: On the 17th a small group of Riders took advantage of the good weather to visit Socorro for lunch at El sombrero. The weather was perfect, cool and sunny and the food was excellent.
