Rider Activities March, 2013

Scheduled Ride:  There was no scheduled ride again this month due to the perversity of climate changes caused by global warming.  No, just kidding!  It’s just typical spring weather in New Mexico.

Unscheduled Ride:  On March 2nd American Legion Riders from all over the Southwest part of New Mexico gathered at the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope (MVCH) facility in Las Cruces to provide aid and support to homeless veterans living in temporary shelter.  The Riders met with the veterans offering needed help and advice to reintegrate their lives such as recovering important military documentation and separation papers.

There were seven veterans, ranging in age from about 30 to 82 years old, living at the shelter of tents, known as Camp Hope, at the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope. The Riders took local veterans to a Wal-Mart Supercenter in the afternoon to help each purchase clothing items, including jeans, shirts, socks and shoes, as well as hygiene products, from body wash and deodorant to shaving cream and razors.  They also treated the veterans to lunch at a local restaurant.

The inaugural event was not particularly well attended, primarily for the same reason the scheduled ride was cancelled; the weather was awful.  We’re hopeful that the next installment will benefit from fine weather and positive word of mouth advertising.

Although we did not get any new member applications, Joyce Hudgins the Auxiliary Poppy chairman did manage to collect $18 in donations.  Below is a photo of our table setup.  Everybody was very complimentary and, as you can see, even the “Cowboy Poet” herself seems to be smiling down on us.

As planned we were able to display our United States, New Mexico and NMALR flags as well as the Post 44 banner.  The POW/MIA table complete with an explanation of the ceremony got quite a bit of attention. The OWW tri-fold and the Poppy boards were helpful as we continue to try to educate our neighbors about the various programs supported by the Legion.

Finally, during preparation for the Post 44 10th anniversary celebration Bob Nellis provided us with some photos from the early days of Chapter 5.  So, in recognition of those who came before, below is a group photo from September of 2006.  Chapter 5 will present a drink token to whoever can correctly identify the most people in the photo.
