Activities and Events: Chapter 5 hosted the “Run For The Wall” bike rally Saturday the 9th.  The rally was part of the Veterans Day festivities that also included the car show at the New Mexico State Veterans Home (NMSHV).

For the first time participants were given the opportunity to choose between two distinctly different types of rides.  One option was similar to a poker run that took the riders to various locations in the T or C, Dam Site and Elephant Butte area.  The other was a longer run that went to Chloride where the participants had lunch at the Chloride Bank Cafe.

The rally was well attended by both local motorcycle enthusiasts and visitors from out of town.  This year the event raised $400 for Veterans Memorial Park.  We anticipate that Chapter 5 will become the permanent host and organizers going forward.

During the evening of the 7th Post 44 and Chapter 5 also participated in an event honoring our senior veterans.  Veterans from every armed conflict since WWII were present and gracefully accepted the applause, camaraderie and mutual recognition of the sacrifices made by those who served.  Each generation shared their mutual respect for those who went before and those who came after; all sharing the same call to duty, love of country and honor. The event was held at the Senior Citizens Center and was attended by representatives of the two VFW’s and other dignitaries including the Mayor of T or C.

Monday the 11th, Post 44 members representing each branch of the American Legion family participated in the ceremonies held on Veterans Day at the NMSVH.  Ours was the only veterans organization to post our colors at the event.  As part of the ceremonies a moment of silence was observed at 11 o’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month marking Armistice Day which essentially concluded hostilities in WWI.  That moment was followed by taps blown by a Junior ROTC member and Amazing Grace was performed on bagpipes.
