Rider Activities August, 2014

Scheduled Ride: The scheduled ride date coincided with the New Mexico Legion Riders State Picnic that ran from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. So we scheduled a “benefit run” that traveled around the local area in order to include members from out of town attending the picnic. The run, which was lead by our Road Captain Bob Duff, was sparsely attended but he reported it went well, had good weather, and it was a good ride.

Special Announcement:

Chapter 5 has been invited to attend the 9-11 candlelight vigil on that Thursday. As of this writing the Rally point and destination have yet to be announced.

Saturday the 13th is the Elephant days parade; the Legion family is entering a float and the Riders are invited to ride alongside the float; staging is at 9:00 at Marina Suites, parade starts at 10:00am.

State Picnic

Chapter 5 hosted the annual NMALR State Picnic this year for the second time in three years. Attendees had the opportunity to visit the Post Friday evening for Karaoke and the next morning for “Second Saturday” breakfast. Chapter 5 prepared a brisket BBQ with all the “fixins” for Saturday afternoon. Cactus Flats provided music Saturday evening and nearly everyone and their dogs came to the party. The music was about over when a horrendous sandstorm followed by a hard rain caused everyone to run for cover. John Bush nicknamed the efforts to clear the bandstand as the sand covered everything; “Operation Desert Storm” (local edition).

Breakfast Ride

On the 14th our Road Captain led several members of Chapter 5 (and nearly as many guests) to the Arrey Cafe for Breakfast. Good ride, good weather, good food!

OWW Wal-Mart Day

On the 16th Chapter 5 joined the rest of the NMALR organization participating in a state-wide telethon and OWW collection effort. Some of you may have seen something about it on TV or seen Legion Riders accepting donations at your local Wal-Mart. Chapter 5 volunteers received nearly $1000 in donations from generous Wal-Mart patrons that day.

Oak Street Re-integration Center

Last month we introduced a veteran re-integration project called the “Oak Street Project”.  The Oak Street facility consists of 22 apartments which are all filled at this point.  Oak Street accepts both men and women and the project has been very successful, with a high rate of graduating residents.

During the course of the month Chapter 5 continued to follow up on that project. We met with, and choose a fencing contractor and by August 20th the fence was installed. Residents began reporting foot traffic through their property had ceased.

To celebrate a successful close to this part of the project Chapter 5 hosted a backyard BBQ picnic. Unit 44 Auxiliary and Chapter 5 members provided the delicious food and local volunteers helped serve.

Residents as well as administrators from the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope and the Mesilla Valley Public Housing Authority attended. Also a large contingent of members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Assoc. along with wives and children joined the group. The CVMA had been acting in concert with Chapter 5 to show support for the residents.

It is worth noting that on the ride home Ron Crom was introduced to the iconic Camel.

Third Tuesday

This was the first month Chapter 5 riders participated in a new initiative to volunteer at the Hamilton Military Museum at Veterans Memorial Park. We had a good turnout with 8 members and one guest who came to learn the routine. The intention is that Chapter 5 will provide volunteers on the third Tuesday afternoon of each month.

Later that evening Chapter 5 members met together at the Post for fun and libation.
