Auxiliary- President- Linda Nenno-575-642-6164

I hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend. It was the kickoff to a pretty busy month.

We had 8 players for Bunco on the 8th. Three new players attended and I think we’ll see them back in the future as they all had a good time. If you want to join in on the fun, we play the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1:00. The more players we have, the more fun! $2 Margaritas just adds to the good time.

Many of you joined us for Elephant Days festivities. We had our monthly bake sale ($130) and participated in the parade. Then we went out to support Gene Hill in the Rib Contest. He didn’t win, but he did cook some darned good ribs! Then on Sunday we participated in the 9/11 Ceremony in conjunction with the City of Elephant Butte. We collected and donated water, Gatorade, and granola bars to the EB and T or C Fire Departments to thank them for their service to our community. Thank you to those who donated and delivered.

The “BIG” event this month was our 5th Annual Family Golf Tournament. It was a huge success, and made a lot of money for the AL Family. I want to express my thanks to all who helped out getting hole sponsorships, working the tournament and helping out with the meal and party at the Post after play. I could not have done it without all of you! It is nice to have it behind me, though. Now my life can get back to normal, whatever that means.

Wednesday, September 21, we hosted our two Girls Staters, Alexis Eaton and Sarah Faulkner, and their families to dinner. These young ladies really enjoyed their experience at Girls State in June, and I’m sure they made us proud. Both are Jr. Auxiliary members.

On Wednesday, September 28, we hosted Paul Carpenter to dinner and presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and a flag and pole. Paul picks up our can trailer (located in front of Amber Jack storage), takes it to Poor Paul’s recycling, dumps it, weighs it, puts money in our account and replaces the trailer. We really appreciate all he does for us, and the little extra money in our Auxiliary account each month.

Program of the month: Education
One of the most important programs of the ALA is Education. We do many activities for this program, including collecting school supplies and clothing, and Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup labels; issued Scholarships, presented cookie trays to teachers and initiated the Angel Tree for needy students. In addition, we sponsor an Oratorical Contest, an Americanism Essay Contest and a Poppy Poster Contest each year and we have purchased patriotic books for school libraries. If you are interested in becoming involved in this program, please contact me. 575-642-6164.

Please check the Auxiliary calendar attached to this newsletter, for upcoming Auxiliary events.

Membership – Linda Nenno

The 2017 membership cards are here and I have started Early Bird renewals. So far we have 115 members who have renewed, or joined. If you know someone who is eligible for membership, give them an application or have them contact me. 575-642-6164. Bring them into the Post as your guest and let them see for themselves what a good time we have. Membership is our most important program, and I need everyone’s help to keep it going strong.

A real friend will never depart –
Even when the road is rough and the way is dark.
There is just no reason to believe
That a real friend will ever leave.
They are always there
Because they always care.
Our friends are there with friendly faces
To help us out in the lowest places.
And that’s just one good thing about them –
Just don’t know what we’d do without them!
They make mistakes and that’s a fact,
But a real friend will have your back!

Care packages- -Marty Novak

In September we sent 25 Care Packages. Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies and to all those who come to pack the boxes. It takes us all to keep this project going.

Thanks to Louisa Apodaca for making neck coolers for our September Care Packages. It is very hot over there right now and those neck coolers are a very welcome addition to the Care Packages. Anyone willing to sew them? I have the pattern if you need it.

We always do Care Packages on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Our next packing day is October 12th. We start arriving at 10 to start setting things up and making boxes and start filling the boxes about 10:30. We are usually finished by 11. Anyone is welcome.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are still collecting used cell phones. These phones are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.
