May is poppy month!

The Poppy – Not Just A Pretty Red Flower
It symbolizes freedom and the blood shed and sacrificed by our troops during war. It originated with the poem “In Flanders Field.” The American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in 1921, and started its Poppy Program in 1924. May is Poppy month, and the Friday before Memorial Day, May 25, is National Poppy Day. Today ALA members distribute millions of poppies all across the country. In most instances, the poppy is made by veterans, or members of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Riders, Auxiliary, or Junior Auxiliary.

The Poppy has been seen on Queen Elizabeth II, the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and others. The Royal Canadian Legion has a poppy campaign, as well as the Scotland Legion. It’s easy to see why the idea of honoring those who have died defending their country and wearing a poppy makes perfect sense.

Not a member of the ALA, but want to help honor our Veterans? Wear a poppy in remembrance – in memoriam.

Our annual poppy drive is Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend; see Linda Nenno to help out with the distribution.

April 30 we will be cleaning the old cemetery by the bowling alley starting at 10:30 a.m. Bring your shovels, gloves, and good pair of shoes to help us get ready for Memorial Day.

May 5 is packed with lots of things to do: Fiesta parade; craft show at the Legion from 8-2:00, call the Post to reserve a table (ask for Linde); Sue Barr fundraiser from 1-4:00 with music by Bob Acre.

Don’t forget our monthly meeting is on May 19 at 10:30 a.m. All our members are welcome to attend.

Between 16-20 ladies have been playing Bunco on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. Our May Bunco dates are the 10th & 24th at 1:00 p.m. It’s $2 margaritas & Mexican beer day.

May 12 is the bake and book sale during the monthly breakfast.

The next ladies lunch will be May 15th at 12:30 p.m. at Johnny B’s Restaurant.

Don’t forget that we have an aluminum can recycle trailer on Highway 195 by the Amberjack sign.

We collect box tops & Campbell soup labels for Education, as well as Bullock’s receipts.

For all other Post activities, please pick up a calendar and newsletter.

PRAYER FOR THE MILITARY:
Dear Lord, Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the men and women who serve our country, and for the sacrifices their families make so that we can all enjoy the blessings of freedom. Guide their choices and their actions, Lord. Help them to see you working in their daily lives, whether in the field, at home, or abroad. Guard their hearts while they are far from loved ones, and bless them with moments to cherish when they are together. Hold these families close, Lord. May they look to You for the strength and peace that only You can give. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Membership – Linda Nenno
Membership has really slowed down, but we did get a couple of new members in April. We now have 358 paid members, still a long way from our June 1 goal of 442. We have had a few new members join in the last few months, and that is wonderful. If you have not renewed, please do it soon. If you need assistance, contact me at 575-642-6164 or xsklmrm@msn.com. Invite your eligible friends to join. You, as a member know what good works we do in the community, and how much fun we have at the Post.

Care Packages – Marty Novak
In April we sent 36 Care Packages to our deployed service men and women. Thanks to all who came to help and a special thank you to Steph and Moe and Ginny for seeing that everything was taken care of and packages got to the Post Office for me when I was unable to be there…flu bug.

Sargent Haro brought his ROTC cadets again to help with the Care Packages. They are a great bunch of kids and I understand they were a lot of help. They just get right in there and do whatever needs doing.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies.

Our next Care Package day is May 9th. We start packing as soon as we finish setting out the supplies and everything is ready. We are usually finished in less than an hour. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun.

For those of you who may not know…we, Liz Nellis and I, started this project in September ’03. We have been sending Care Packages every month since then. To date, we have sent a total of 9011 Care Packages. Thank you for helping. Without your help we wouldn’t be able to keep this project going.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran:
A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act…
