Wow, May is here and that means our fiscal year is almost over. We’ll have a busy month with Veterans’ meals, Fiesta, Kentucky Derby, Scholarships, Memorial Day and Poppy distribution. In addition, I’m sure many of us have graduations to attend both locally and afar. Be safe in your travels!

We presented the Girls State program to Hot Springs HS, Manzano and Hatch Valley HS in March and April. So far, we have 3 young ladies registered to attend. It’s a wonderful program that teaches government, leadership and independence. The dates are June 4-9 and it is held in Portales at ENMU. The Auxiliary pays for tuition and transportation. We are currently looking for donations to help with this program. Each delegate costs us $200 plus transportation.

We had 11 players at Bunco on the 13th. We’ve had to cancel on the 27th as too many people have other obligations or will be out of town. Bunco resumes on May 11, at 1:00. Come join us!

At our monthly meeting, we passed the hat for Bountiful Babies and collected $42. The membership approved a $200 donation to the EB Fire Dept. Linda Ross reported on several members that are ill or have family members that are fighting cancer. We lost our dear Betty Hansen, age 92, on April 19.

We made $200 at our April bake sale. This money will help us take our Junior members to convention in June. Thanks to those of you who bake, donate and buy. Group A bakes for May 11.

We will have a float in the Fiesta Parade on May 6. If you would like to ride on it, let me know. If you want to help decorate the boat, we will meet at Tom Cleveland’s house at 203 Calle del Ranchero, EB, at 1:30 on May 4.

If you will be in town Memorial Day weekend and would be willing to help with the poppy drive, please contact Sharon Pierson at 575-740-3639. We will be distributing them Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Walmart, Pat’s, Bullocks and a couple more locations. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Memorial Day ceremonies will be held on May 29, beginning at 9:00 at the new cemetery and progressing from there to old cemetery, the Wall and ending at Ralph Edwards park at 10:30.

Our June meeting date will be changed due to a conflict with the Boat and RV Show. The SAL will be serving Hamburgers and Hotdogs and the Auxiliary will be selling something cool—maybe popsicles and watermelon. The meeting will be held on Friday, June 16 at 10:30.

Donations for Girls State
Our delegates to Girls State will be working on several different projects. They are in need of some supplies. For their service project, they are collecting new toys, games and books for Carrie Tingley Hospital. PLEASE, no stuffed toys or toy guns!

For their campaigning, they need poster board, construction paper, markers, stickers, glue sticks, and any other craft supplies you might be able to donate.

And, of course, monetary donations are always welcomed and appreciated.

Membership keeps growing slowly. We now have 349 paid members, still a long way from our June 1 goal of 442. We have had a few new members join in the last few months, and that is wonderful. May their devotion and loyalty to you and to their home-land inspire them in moments of challenge, and comfort them in tribulation and long separation from loved ones. Care packages – Marty Novak
In April we sent 20 Care Packages. Thanks to all who came to help pack the boxes.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies. It takes us all to keep this project going.

WE ARE NEEDING HELP TO PAY FOR POSTAGE FOR THE CARE PACKAGES. IT COSTS $13.60 TO SEND 1 FILLED BOX TO A DEPLOYED SERVICE MAN OR WOMAN. THAT’S NOT A LOT TO BRING A BIT OF HOME TO THESE BRAVE PEOPLE AND TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE THINKING OF THEM AND APPRECIATE WHAT THEY ARE DOING FOR US.

YOU CAN HELP BY BEING MORE GENEROUS AT OUR DESSERT TABLE AT THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNERS. OR JUST A DONATION WILL HELP. IT TAKES US ALL TO KEEP THIS WORTHY PROJECT GOING. PLEASE HELP WHEN, WHERE AND HOW YOU CAN. THANK YOU

We do Care Packages on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Our next packing day is May 10th. We are ready to start filling the boxes about 10:15-10:30 and usually finish by 11. Anyone is welcome.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are still collecting used cell phones. These phones are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
