May was a pretty busy month. We started with our Veteran’s Dinner of meatloaf. They don’t seem to mind what the menu is as long as they get to come and listen to the music and dance. What a treat it is to host them every month and see those smiles. Thank you to the American Legion for helping us make this possible with their donations from Charity.

May 6 we had a float and a couple of decorated golf carts in the Fiesta parade. We even got a couple of our Junior Auxiliary members, Sarah Faulkner and Logan Green, to ride on the float. Three other junior members were also in the parade. McKensi Spears marched with JROTC, Karina Gonzales was on the Fiesta royalty float as 2nd runner-up and Micah Spears was on the Fair royalty float as princess. It’s nice to see these young women so active in the community!

The pork chop fundraiser dinner for Logan Green was well attended. Logan will be going to Australia in July to represent T or C and the US in a volleyball tournament. Good luck, Logan.

Our May meeting was jam-packed! We began by awarding a scholarship to Sarah Faulkner and an Americanism National Essay winner pin to Josh Tolley. We initiated 4 new members into the Auxiliary; Cindy Asher, Phyllis Colpitts, Angie Faulkner and Barbara Thompson. Welcome ladies! Then, we elected officers for 2017-2018.

Congrats ladies! We are confident you will represent our Unit well. I have enjoyed being the Auxiliary President the past 3 years and am now looking forward to having a little free time. These officers take over July 1. Please give them your support!

The membership unanimously voted to raise our annual dues for both senior (18 & older), $40 and Junior (under 18), $10 members. This becomes effective with the 2018 card renewals and new members.

Bunco was well attended on the 25th. Our next Bunco will be June 8, 1:00. Come join us, even if you’ve never played. Margaritas on special also. Most of us will be gone for the June 22 Bunco, but if any of you want to play, feel free.

Memorial Day ceremonies were beautiful. Thanks to all the people who put out the flags and then pick them up. I know it’s a hard job to get them pounded into the ground sometimes. Also, a BIG thanks to everyone who worked the poppy drive. I didn’t have a total of how much we collected before deadline. All of this money goes directly to help Veterans and/or their families. Thank you, Nick and Kathy Howe, Maida Sanders and Dan Lanquist for making poppies for us to distribute.

Mark your calendar for June 10. The Auxiliary and Moose Lodge 2050 are working together to have a red enchilada dinner 4-7 PM, to raise money for care packages. Tickets $9, available from the bar, most Auxiliary members, or at the door. This dinner is open to the public, so bring all your friends.

The Auxiliary will be selling watermelon and lemonade at the Boat and RV show on June 17. Come out and visit us. Because of that event, our June meeting will be held on the 16th at 10:30.

We will provide a Father’s Day Rib dinner on the 18th, 5-6. All member fathers eat free. All others $8.

Our Annual American Legion Auxiliary Convention will be held June 22-25 in Roswell. Registration is due by June 16th, so there is still time to sign up if you’d like to go. Liz Foster will be installed as our 2017-2018 Department President!

Thanks to all of you who have renewed your membership and brought in new members. We have reached 81% of our final goal. I’m sad to report we will not make our goal of 100% this year. We will receive our 2018 cards at State Convention in late June, so we’ll be starting Early Bird renewals in July. Membership dues have been increased to $40 for Senior members and $10 for Junior members effective with our 2018 cards.

May their devotion and loyalty to you and to their home-land inspire them in moments of challenge, and comfort them in tribulation and long separation from loved ones. Care packages – Marty Novak
In May we sent 22 Care Packages. Thanks to all who came to help pack the boxes.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies. It takes us all to keep this project going.

WE ARE NEEDING HELP TO PAY FOR POSTAGE FOR THE CARE PACKAGES. IT COSTS $13.60 TO SEND 1 FILLED BOX TO A DEPLOYED SERVICE MAN OR WOMAN. THAT’S NOT A LOT TO BRING A BIT OF HOME TO THESE BRAVE PEOPLE AND TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE THINKING OF THEM AND APPRECIATE WHAT THEY ARE DOING FOR US.

YOU CAN HELP BY BEING MORE GENEROUS AT OUR DESSERT TABLE AT THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNERS. OR JUST A DONATION WILL HELP. IT TAKES US ALL TO KEEP THIS WORTHY PROJECT GOING. PLEASE HELP WHEN, WHERE AND HOW YOU CAN. THANK YOU

We do Care Packages on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Our next packing day is June 14th. We are ready to start filling the boxes about 10:15-10:30 and usually finish by 11. Anyone is welcome.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
