Thank you, thank you, thank you for baking, baking and more baking for the luminaria walk, care packages and for 50 cookie trays that we delivered to businesses in the community that support us throughout the year.

Our National Commander will be in Elephant Butte on January 7 at noon for lunch, then touring the New Mexico Veteran’s Home. Please let me know if you would like to join us for lunch to meet our National Commander.

Several of us delivered 51 Christmas gifts to the Sierra Joint Office on Aging (SJOA) last month. This organization does wonderful things for our elderly that are shut-in and/or need their services. Sue Penner from SJOA will be speaking at our January meeting. I hope you will plan on joining us at our monthly meeting on January 20 at 10:30 a.m. to learn more of what they do and how we can all help.

We had a 15 ladies playing Bunco in December. Our January Bunco dates are the 11th & 25th at 1:00 p.m. It’s $2.00 margaritas & Mexican beer day.

January 13 is the bake and book sale will be during the monthly breakfast.

The next ladies lunch will be January 16th at 12:30 p.m. at the Old Brick Café (where Bella Luca was located).
The Past President’s Parley will be hosting an Auxiliary workshop on February 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the RV Resort. To learn more about our organization, please mark your calendars to attend.

Don’t forget that we have an aluminum can recycle trailer on Hwy 195 by the Amberjack sign.

We are also collecting box tops for Education.

We say prayers for our loved ones and friends who are suffering. It is by the Grace of God that those prayers are answered and healing powers go straight to those in need.

This time of year is especially difficult if a loved one passes on. We can be consoled by remembering those people were loved and we have fond memories of them. God is blessed with their presence. God will be with us through it all.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Thank you to those who have renewed for 2018. The dues are $40/year, and help us continue the programs that serve Veterans and their families. Membership is our most important program, since without members, we cease to exist. Tell your non-member friends about us, what we do and encourage them to join if they are eligible. Carry a membership application in your purse. You, as a member, know we have some really good things going on at the Post, and we always have a lot of fun, so spread the word. As of December 20, we had 272 paid members. Remember, door cards change January 1, 2018 and you will not be able to get a new one without a 2018 card.

Care Packages-Marty Novak
We sent 40 Care Packages filled with Christmas cheer in December. Thanks to all who came to help pack the boxes. The boxes were filled to the brim with homemade cookies and candies, Christmas cards and letters from the Elementary School and Manzano Christian School as well as salsa, toiletries, socks and a lot of love. When I saw all the cookies coming in I thought we would have left overs…but when we finished with the boxes, there was not a single cookie, piece of fudge, or any goodie left. Thank you all for helping to make this Christmas better for our deployed men and women.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies.

Our next Care Package day is January 10. We start about 10:15 making boxes, arranging supplies, making up toiletry bags and start packing as soon as everything is ready. We are usually finished in less than an hour. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
