Our National Commander visited us on January 7 and then toured the New Mexico Veteran’s Home. Thanks to everyone who helped to make her visit successful.

We donated $200 to the Truth or Consequences Middle School for their National Geographic project in obtaining new water fountains.

We’ll be decorating the Post on February 5 at noon for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.

We have had 16-20 ladies playing Bunco in January. Our February Bunco dates are the 8th & 22nd at 1:00 p.m. It’s $2.00 margaritas & Mexican beer day.

February 10 the bake and book sale will be during the monthly breakfast. Remember those special treats for Valentine’s Day.

The mid-year conference will be held in Albuquerque on February 9-10 at the MCM Elegante. Pre-registration cutoff is February 2, the fee is $10.00. If you are interested in going, please contact me.

The next ladies lunch will be February 20th at 12:30 p.m. at Johnny B’s.

The Past President’s Parley will be hosting a member orientation workshop on February 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the RV Resort. To learn more about our benefits, programs, what we do and building new friendship, please plan on joining us.

We have been busy talking to our local schools to present the poppy poster contest and the Girls State programs.

Don’t forget that we have an aluminum can recycle trailer on Hwy 195 by the Amberjack sign.
We are also collecting box tops for Education.

PRAYERS FOR HEALING: Pam Sallee is having foot surgery. Phyllis Colpitts fell and broke her shoulder. Mary O’Neill is ill but recovering at home. Christie Conklin’s husband in hospital, not related to successful hip replacement. Carla Averill having oral surgery in LC.

It is by the Grace of God that our prayers are answered and healing powers go straight to those in need.

CONDOLENCES: Kathy Howe’s sister-in-law Cindy passed. Abigail Claesson’s grandfather passed away. George Hittle friend of many members passed away.

God Bless the families and friends who are suffering the loss of a loved one. We can be consoled by remembering those people were loved and we have fond memories of them. God is blessed with their presence.

Membership – Linda Nenno
Thank you to those who have renewed for 2018. The dues are now $40/year, and help us continue the programs that serve Veterans and their families. Membership is our most important program, since without members, we cease to exist. Tell your non-member friends about us, what we do, and encourage them to join if they are eligible. Carry a membership application in your purse. You, as a member, know we have some really good things going on at the Post, and we always have a lot of fun, so spread the word. As of January 22, we have 318 paid members. Remember, door cards change January 1, 2018 and you will not be able to get a new one without a 2018 card.

Care Packages – Marty Novak
We sent 30 Care Packages in January. Thanks to all who came to help pack the boxes.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies.

Our next Care Package day is February 14. We start about 10:15 making boxes, arranging supplies, making up toiletry bags and start packing as soon as everything is ready. We are usually finished in less than an hour. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
