Happy Spring!

March blew in, but that’s Spring in New Mexico. Hopefully it won’t blow through April. The Veterans joined us for a dinner of fried fish and dancing on the 1st.

The workshop we presented on March 4 was attended by 18 ladies. All reports are that it was successful. I hope everyone learned something new.

Bunco has been very successful the last couple of months. We play on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 1:00. $10 donation to the Auxiliary. Come join us for a fun afternoon. Margaritas on special for $2 also, so how can you lose?

The Auxiliary is having a raffle for a number of items. Tickets are $1/ea or 6/$5. Look for flyers at the post. All proceeds go to our Girls State program. Tickets are available from the bartender.

The drawings will be on May 20 at our regular meeting.

Our monthly bake/book sale brought in $242. Thanks to those who baked, donated, bought and worked the sale. This money helps us support many programs.

Thank you, Marty Novak, Barbara Thompson, and Linda Knull and her grandsons, and Ginny Lucero, Martha Thibeau and Linda Ross for manning our table at the Sentinel Anniversary celebration on March 18. We collected some care package funds, poppy donations and handed out several applications for membership. Good job telling people who we are and what we do!
We had 16 ladies for lunch on the 21st at the EB Inn. This month’s lunch will be on April 18, at 12:30 at Hodge’s in Elephant Butte. Come join us for lots of visiting, eating and laughing.
Our District 7 Spring meeting will be held in Deming on April 8 at 10:00. Please let me know if you plan to attend. They are asking for donations of toilet paper, paper towels, bar soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, razors and shaving cream. If you have small bottles of toiletries from motels, they’re great. These items are not covered by food stamps and are needed by the Veteran residents at Oak Street.

Membership keeps growing slowly. We now have 336 paid members, still a long way from our June 1 goal of 442. We have had a few new members join in the last few months, and that is wonderful. You, as a member know what good works we do in the community, and how much fun we have at the Post.

Care packages – Marty Novak
In March we sent 30 Care Packages. Thanks to all who came to help pack the boxes.
Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies. It takes us all to keep this project going.

WE ARE NEEDING HELP TO PAY FOR POSTAGE FOR THE CARE PACKAGES. IT COSTS $13.60 TO SEND 1 FILLED BOX TO A DEPLOYED SERVICE MAN OR WOMAN. THAT’S NOT A LOT TO BRING A BIT OF HOME TO THESE BRAVE PEOPLE AND TO LET THEM KNOW WE ARE THINKING OF THEM AND APPRECIATE WHAT THEY ARE DOING FOR US. YOU CAN HELP BY BEING MORE GENEROUS AT OUR DESSERT TABLE AT THE WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNERS. OR JUST A DONATION WILL HELP. IT TAKES US ALL TO KEEP THIS WORTHY PROJECT GOING. We do Care Packages on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Our next packing day is April 12th. A few of us start arriving early…around 10…to start setting things up and making boxes. We are ready to start filling the boxes about 10:30 and usually finish by 11. Anyone is welcome.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are still collecting used cell phones. These phones are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.

What is a Veteran:
A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act.
