Auxiliary President – Sharon Pierson
- National Anthem Day: March 3rd was our country’s National Anthem Day and Unit 44 members celebrated the day by assisting with a group walk through the halls of the NMSVH. At several stops along the way the group stopped and sang the National Anthem. The residents enjoyed it so much we decided to repeat the event each 1st and 3rd Monday of the month (nails days) and sing various patriotic songs.
- Care Packge Proclamation: On Wednesday, March 5th, Elephant Butte Mayor Eunice Kent proclaimed the day “Care Package Day”, in honor of the more than 7,300 care packages Unit 44 has sent to deployed troops overseas. Representatives of the Legion, the Riders and the Auxiliary were present to accept the proclamation. As the mayor read it out loud, tears were seen on the faces of many attending the Council session. That evening during the Wednesday night dinner the Auxiliary presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Legionnaires of Post 44 in recognition of all they have given in support of this program. Their generosity and support has been invaluable to the success of the Care Package project.
- BUNCO: This month we had a great turnout for BUNCO and everyone had a great time. We’ve decided to continue having BUNCO on the third Thursday of the month and possibly the occasional Sunday afternoon. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by and play you are missing out on a lot of fun.
- Visitors for Monthly Meeting: Sharon Finarelli from the Sierra Vista Hospital, as well as two members from EMS stopped by to discuss the new “hands only” CPR technique and provide us with information on current and upcoming services at Sierra Vista. Sharon left brochures for anyone not able to attend the March meeting.
- Potato Bar / Cake Walk: While not quite as successful as last year, we still raised funds for the Auxiliary and had a jolly good time with the cake walk on Sunday, March 16th. Many thanks to everyone who baked potatoes, provided toppings and, of course to those who baked the cakes.
- Group Walk at NMSVH: March 17th was a fun day at the veteran’s home. At 8:30am our music chairman, Marty Novak and several Unit 44 members got the day off to a rousing start by leading a group of residents on a group walk while singing the “Fight” songs of the different branches of the military. Even residents who were not participating in the walk came out of their rooms to listen and request the singing of their particular fight song. Once again it was a wonderful success. If you like to sing and would like to join the group, show up at the veteran’s home at 8:15am on the first and third Mondays of the month.
- .Pot holder fundraiser: So far this project has been a very successful fund raiser – and we haven’t even taken any potholders to the Craft Fair yet! We’ve had such a great turnout at our “group” potholder making sessions at the Post and several members have been busy making them at home. Hopefully they will sell really well at the “Pecans & More” craft fair on March 28th & 29th. Poppy Poster & Americanism Essay Contests: The posters and essays arein and judging underway. The judging must be completed and the winners in the hands of the Department Chairmen by April 15th. If you have any interest in helping out please contact Linda Nenno or Joyce Hudgens – believe me when I tell you they will certainly appreciate the help!
- Spring District Meeting: We have received the call for the Spring District meeting to be held on April 12th at Post 10 in Las Cruces. If you would like to attend please contact Johanna Roberts, Ginny Miller or Linda Nenno for specific information.
- Year End Reports: Just a reminder to all officers and chairmen that year-end reports are due to Department Chairmen by April 15th.

Dear Auxiliary Sisters and friends,
Sadly this will be my last newsletter. For personal reasons I have resigned my position as President of Unit 44. I want to thank each and every one of you for all the love, support (and patience) you have shown me for the past two years. While being president was never easy, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I have enjoyed it, and all of you, more than I have words to express.
Johanna Roberts has stepped up to be your President for the next three months. This will be a difficult time for her, especially as it has come so unexpectedly. I know each of you will give her the same support and understanding I have always known.

Yippee!!! We reached our goal of 403 last week. Thank you to all of you who renewed and brought in new members. We couldn’t do it without you. If you have not renewed for 2014, please do it as soon as you can. You don’t want to miss out on any of the fun activities going on at the Post.

Care Packages and Cell Phones: Marty Novak
We sent 62 Care Packages in March. Thanks to all the people who came to help pack the boxes. These Care Packages mean so much to the Troops who receive them. Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us and the monetary donations and supplies given to us from members, nonmembers, groups and organizations and businesses of our community to help us keep this project going. Thank you all. It takes us all to do this.
Mayor Eunice Kent presented us with a Proclamation declaring March 5 Care Package Day “in honor of those who generously serve and protect the values, freedoms and people of the United States of America; and to those who extend their respect and admiration in such a tangible way. Always Faithful! God bless our Troops, Veterans, their Families and the American Legion Auxiliary.” This means all of you….all you helpers, those of you who donate goods, funds, time, energy into getting these Care Packages out to the troops. I am so proud of you all.
Anyone is welcome to join us for Care Packages. It’s a lot of fun. Our next Care Package packing day is April 9. We arrive about 10:30 to start arranging the supplies and start packing shortly after that. It takes about an hour to finish.
CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
We are still collecting used cell phones. These are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.
