Newsletter – August 2015

Auxiliary- President- Linda Nenno

We started the month of July with a two-day bake sale at the Boat and RV show. It wasn’t as successful as we had hoped, but we still made $150. There was lots of traffic, but they were mostly passing us by on their way to the lake. Thank you to all who baked and worked this event.

We had 10 Veterans attend dinner on the 8th. They had a good time dancing as usual.

Bunco on the 9th was a good crowd. We had 3 full tables, and a couple of new players. It is always more fun when we have more people. Plan to join us on July 28th at noon.

I missed our July meeting as I was out of town. I understand we had 3 new members and one young guest in attendance. Welcome Julie Bryan, Martina Myers, Samantha Mendoza and guest, Adrianna Houser, granddaughter of Vince and Arlea Hadley.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Several of our members do nails for the women Veterans at the Veteran’s home, and walk and sing with all the Veterans on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. If you would like to help with that or with any of the activities going on out there, please contact Steph Ross (575-740-3971) or Sandi Harrison (915-637-4144). They always need more hands on deck and it is very rewarding, and the Veterans really enjoy the extra attention.

Another activity that could use extra hands is packing Care packages for deployed service men and women. The group meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 10:30 at the Post.

It is time once again to start collecting bottled water, Gatorade, and granola bars for the 9/11 donation to the local fire departments. There will also be a donation can for those of you who do not wish to shop.

We will have Bunco on the 13th at 1:00 PM and on the 25th at noon. Both days have drink specials, so come join in on the fun.

The monthly bake/book sale will be on the 8th. Please bring your baked goods to the Post on Friday or Saturday morning. Please label baked goods, especially if they contain nuts.

We will be holding a “test pilot” on how to write a (winning) report on August 18 at 2:30 at the EB RV Resort. Please contact Liz Foster if you plan to attend. 575-740-4936.

We will participate in the Elephant Days parade on the 22nd. We have 5 golf carts that will need to be decorated, and will need passengers. If you want to help, we will meet at Johanna’s at 403 Cactus, at 2:00 PM on Friday the 21st to decorate the carts.

On August 29th the Post will have a “Hot August Nights” potluck. The Auxiliary will be selling ice cream sundaes. Come out and have a good time and help support the Post.

Care packages-Cell phones for soldiers-Marty Novak

We sent 30 Care Packages in July. Thanks to all who came to pack. These packages mean a lot to our Service men and women who are far from home.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies. It takes us all to keep this project going.

It is hot over there right now and neck coolers are much appreciated. If anyone would like to help make neck coolers I have the pattern. Call 744-4539 or email novaks@windstream.net

Our next packing day is August 12. We start about 10:30 and it takes about an hour to finish. Anyone is welcome.

Cell Phones for Soldiers-Marty Novak

We are still collecting used cell phones. These phones are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..

Newsletter – July 2015

Auxiliary- President- Linda Nenno

June was another busy month. We hosted our Veterans as usual. We now have a cook in the kitchen, but we still need 2-3 volunteers to help with taking money and serving. Welcome, Patty Gilbert! We will also need 1 volunteer on Friday nights to help Patty in the kitchen, taking orders and money. Please contact me or Ginny Lucero if you can help.

We held our monthly bake/book sale at breakfast , and made $141.50. Thanks to all of you who baked, bought and worked. This month, we will be having a two day bake sale on the 3rd and 4th at the Boat and RV show, from 10-2. This is going to be at the Elephant Butte Event Center on Warm Springs and Water St. We will also be raffling the lap robe, and hopefully signing up new members.

We had 15 players for Bunco on the 11th, and only 4 of us on the 26th, so we weren’t able to play. It’s always more fun when we have more players. Come join us on July 9th at 1:00 and on the 28th at noon. As an added incentive, Thursdays are $2 Margaritas, and Tuesdays are $2 domestic beer or well drinks.

Thank you, Karen Whitmore, for the wonderful idea of honoring our WWII and Korean era Veterans on Flag Day. It was a wonderful day starting with the flag burning ceremony, a delicious lunch, and ending with a USO type show. Thanks to all who helped put this together.

We want to thank Mayor, Eunice Kent , for attending our General Membership meeting in June and sharing some of the plans the city has for the future.

Father’s Day Brunch, hosted by the Activities committee was delicious. Brats, beans, coleslaw and potato salad. What could be better on a hot summer day?

Nine Auxiliary members went to State Convention the end of June, and came back with many awards and stories. Plan to attend our August meeting when we will celebrate the awards we won.

Upcoming events:

Bake sale 7/3 and 7/4 at RV and Boat show
Ladies lunch at EB Inn 7/21, 12:30
Bunco 7/9 at 1:00 and 7/28 at noon
