Membership keeps growing slowly. We now have 354 paid members, still a long way from our June 1 goal of 442. We have had quite a few new members join in the last few months, and that is wonderful. If you have not renewed, please do it soon. If you need assistance, contact me at 575-642-6164 or xsklmrm@msn.com.

Invite your eligible friends to join. You, as a member, know what good works we do in the community, and how much fun we have at the Post.

Care Packages – Marty Novak
In March we sent 30 Care Packages to our deployed service men and women. Each month Pam Carlton and her K-2 class at Manzano Christian School colors pictures and wr1te letters to be included in the packages. She also writes a letter telling them a little about what is going on in our community. Several of the recipients have written back telling her and the students how much they enjoy the pictures and letters. One of our new recipients, a Medic, is the brother of one of Pam’s co-workers so these cards and letters will be very special to him. Pam, thanks to you and all your students for their monthly cards and letters.

Sargent Haro will be bringing his ROTC cadets again to help with the Care Packages in April. They are a great bunch of kids and a lot of help. They just get right in there and do whatever needs doing.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies.

Our next Care Package day is April 11. The ROTC will be arriving at 10 so we will be starting a little earlier than usual making boxes, arranging supplies, making up toiletry bags. We start packing as soon as everything is ready. We are usually finished in less than an hour. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act…

Care Packages – Marty Novak

We were blessed to have Sgt. Haro bring 20 of his ROTC cadets to help pack our 25 Care Packages in February. They learned and helped with all aspects of packing the boxes and getting them ready to mail…from helping make boxes to helping close the boxes and putting on address labels and customs forms. They even helped with breaking down the cardboard boxes for recycling and loading the boxes into the truck. They plan to come back and help again in April. Thanks to all who came to help pack and guide the cadets in the various steps of packing and finishing the boxes. We look forward to them coming again.
