Newsletter – August 2018

Auxiliary President – Ginny Lucero – 505-453-7401
Our charity donations in July were: $100 to American Legion Post 44 for the Golf Tournament.

The Auxiliary has lots of great ways to volunteer and support us in this community; from Americanism to Veterans Affairs.

The Veterans Home is in need of folks to help with walking and singing to the veterans; doing nails and helping with Bingo. Please look for the monthly calendar to see what might interest you.

We are beginning our Give 10 program in July. As you may have noticed the school supplies are already out. When you are shopping, purchase a few items and bring them to the Legion; i.e., 10 pencils or 10 notebooks. There are many items for $.50 or less. Please put your name in or on the bag so we can credit each and every person. Everything is a help to our school children. Our Education committee will present the school supplies to all the schools in Sierra County. If you would like to help deliver these items, please call me. Our next bake sale fundraiser will be August 11 during the monthly breakfast from 8-10:00 a.m. We appreciate everyone’s support.

Don’t forget our monthly meeting is on August 18 at 10:30 a.m. All our members are encouraged and welcomed to attend.

Thanks to everyone who supported Special Operations, Inc. or better known as K-9 Forensics and everyone who helped make this event a success.

Don’t forget that we have an aluminum can recycle trailer on Hwy 195 by the Amberjack sign.

We collect box tops & Campbell soup labels for Education, as well as Bullock’s receipts.

For all other Post activities, please pick up a calendar and newsletter.

PRAYER FOR THE MILITARY:
O God Almighty, we ask that you will strengthen and protect the members of the Armed Forces of the United States of America. May their devotion and loyalty to you and to their home-land inspire them in moments of challenge, and comfort them in tribulation and long separation from loved ones. And finally, we ask that they may return safely to serve you and our Country in the days and years to come.
Amen

Membership – Linda Nenno
We have 44 paid members so far. Hopefully, we’ll do better this year. Maybe National will give us an attainable goal. The 2019 cards are here and we started Early Bird renewal on July 1 and will run it through September 30. If you renew your membership during that time you will have a chance to win a free membership. Drawing will be held at the October meeting. Note: Our membership dues are $40 for Senior members and $10 for Junior members.

If you know anyone who is eligible and interested in joining, give them an application or introduce them to me so we can get them signed up. We always need new members.

Care Packages – Marty Novak
In July we sent 34 Care Packages to our deployed service men and women. Thanks to all who came to help. And thanks to Logan Knull and Micah Speers who came with their grandmas and Haley Woolf who came with her mother, Sharon Rivera to help. We were a little short-handed with a couple of our regulars missing and these young people just jumped right in to help. Thanks, kids. We have some wonderful people who help us every month…shopping for supplies, picking up the donation of salsa from Bullocks, and picking up boxes from the Post Office. Thank you all. We couldn’t do it without you.

Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and business of our community for their monetary donations, memorials and donations of supplies.

It’s time to start sending neck coolers in our Care Packages. It’s quite hot over there in the desert. I have the pattern if anyone would like to help make them.

Our next Care Package day is August 8th. We start packing as soon as we finish setting out the supplies and everything is ready…about 10:15 and we are usually finished by about 11:00. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
