The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of NM Mid-Year Conference will be held on February 8-10, 2019 at the Ramada Hotel in Albuquerque, NM. If you are interested in going, please see one of the officers to register. Hotel reservations need to be made as soon as possible.

The Veterans Home is in need of folks to help with walking and singing to the veterans; doing nails and helping with Bingo. Please look for the monthly calendar to see what might interest you.

February 3 is Super Bowl Sunday; the Post is having a soup and sandwich pot luck starting at 3:00 p.m., prizes, trivia and drink specials.

The Activities Committee is trying a monthly birthday celebration; the first one will be Sunday, February 10 at 4:00 p.m., its soup pot luck. If your birthday is in February, please mark your special day on the banner at the Post.

On February 24 we’ll be hosting a chili cook-off at 4:00 p.m.

The members of the cookbook committee thank you for all your recipes. We will be sending more information for dedications, and compiling a list of those who would like to order a cookbook. Thank you all for the fabulous recipes.

Group B will bake for the monthly bake sale during breakfast on February 9, 2019.

Everyone is invited to attend our monthly membership meeting on Saturday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Don’t forget that we have an aluminum can recycle trailer on Highway 195 by the Amberjack sign.

We collect box tops & Campbell soup labels for Education, as well as Bullock’s receipts.

Our next Care Package day is February 13th. We start packing as soon as we finish setting out the supplies and everything is ready…about 10:15 and we are usually finished by about 11:00. Anyone is welcome to come help us pack. It’s lots of fun. Come join us.

Cell Phones for Soldiers
We are no longer collecting cell phones. Homeland security will only allow me to send 3 cell phones at a time rather than sending them in the medium flat rate box. This is making it too costly to continue.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act…

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s holiday.

December was a busy month for us.

We had a great turn out at the beach walk; all the pecan pie muffins and Sloppy Joes were gone in record time.

We packed 46 care packages to send to our troops with lots of cookies, candy, fudge and a few of the things they need the most.

We delivered 38 Christmas gift to the Sierra Joint Office on Aging (SJOA) for the elderly and those who are shut in.

We delivered nearly 30 Angel tree gifts to the elementary school on behalf of the American Legion Family.

We delivered 46 cookie trays to businesses in the area for their support to our cause.

Thank you all for your support of all these projects and all the baking that everyone did.

The Christmas party last month was a big success, thanks to everyone who participated.

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Thank you to those who have renewed for 2019. The dues are $40/year, and help us continue the programs that serve Veterans and their families. Membership is our most important program, since without members, we cease to exist. Tell your non-member friends about us, what we do and encourage them to join if they are eligible. Carry a membership application in your purse. You, as a member, know we have some really good things going on at the Post, and we always have a lot of fun, so spread the word. As of December 20, we had 260 paid members. Remember, door cards change January 1, 2019 and you will not be able to get a new one without a 2019 card.

Care Packages – Marty Novak
We sent 46 Christmas Care Packages filled to the brim with home-made cookies, candies, caramel corn, candy canes, and all sorts of goodies to our deployed service men and women. Thanks to all who came to help. And thanks to Captain Joe Baca and Sgt Haro for bringing some of their JROTC cadets to help pack the boxes. We always appreciate these young people helping us with this project. One day we may be sending packages to some of them.

Thanks to all who baked cookies, made candies and all the other goodies and packaged them for sending in the boxes. We couldn’t have done this without you and I know our troops will be happy to get some Christmas goodies from home.

Thanks also to Pam Carlton and her kindergarten/1st grade class at Manzano Christian School for the cards they made for the Care Packages.
