Auxiliary Vice President- Linda Nenno
January offered a short reprieve for the Auxiliary. We still hosted the Veterans for dinner. After missing last month due to their van breaking down, they were very happy to be at the post again. Thank you Ginny and Cyndi for cooking, and the other volunteers for serving and cleaning up. We have a great team of workers. We chose to skip the monthly bake sale this month, but never fear, it will return on February 14, with special offerings for your Valentine. We had a good turn-out for Bunco this month. We’re going to try two Bunco days next month—2nd Thursday and 4th Tuesday. Come play with us. If you’ve never played, we can teach you in about 3 minutes. This is a 50/50 fundraiser $10. We initiated 10 new members at our January meeting; Cathie Fewell, Sharon Mosier, Karen Hergenrider, Louise Tucker, Maureen Graham, Carol Schroder, Lori Montgomery, Julie Crespy, Maurene Propst, and Mae Benjamin. Please make these new members feel welcome when you see them.

The American Legion Auxiliary is an organization that provides women of all ages, Junior and adult members, the opportunity to develop and hone their leadership skills. Our organization depends upon an ever-emerging stream of competent new leaders, trained and guided by experienced ones, to assume leadership within the Auxiliary and advance its mission long into the future. The Auxiliary offers a variety of opportunities for members to serve in leadership roles, from chairing a short-term community service project at the unit level to running for a national office.
Unit 44 will start the Sr. Auxiliary Basics Course : Our History and Legacy. This is the same course that used to be called “Leadership” Course. The Course will start Tuesday, March 3 at 2pm at the Elephant Butte RV Resort. Each course will be one hour long; we will meet every Tuesday at the same time until we have completed the course. Each member completing the course will receive a certificate and a beautiful Leadership pin. If you plan to take the course, please email Liz Foster, fosterliz1954@gmail.com so we have enough copies of the course for everyone.

Auxiliary Membership Report-Linda Nenno
Thank you to those who have renewed for 2015. The dues are still $30/year, and help us continue the programs that serve Veterans and their families. Membership is our most important program, since without members, we cease to exist. Tell your non-member friends about us, what we do and encourage them to join if they are eligible. Carry a membership application in your purse. You, as a member, know we have some really good things going on at the Post, and we always have a lot of fun, so spread the word. As of January 20, we have 328 paid members, which puts us at 78% of our final goal. Remember, door cards change January 1, 2015 and you will not be able to get a new one without a 2015 card.

IT’S A WONDERFUL WORLD
In spite of the fact we complain and lament
And view this old world with much discontent,
Deploring conditions and grumbling because
There’s so much injustice and so many flaws,
It’s a wonderful world and people like you
Who make it that way by the things that they do…
For a warm, ready smile, or a kind, thoughtful deed
Or a hand outstretched in an hour of need
Can change our outlook and make the world bright…
Where a minute before just nothing seemed right…
It’s a wonderful world and it always will be
If we keep our eyes open and focused to see
The wonderful things man is capable of
When he opens his heart to God and his love.

What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act.
Care Packages and Cell Phones: Marty Novak
We sent 24 Care Packages in January. Thanks to all who came to help pack. These Care Packages mean so much to the Troops who receive them. Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non members, groups, organizations, and businesses of our community for their monetary donations and donations of supplies to help us keep this project going. Thank you all. We are working hard to keep this project going. So if you can help with any donation, it will be much appreciated. Since beginning this project in September ’03 we have sent a total of 7799 Care Packages to our deployed Troops. We couldn’t have done it without YOU!
Anyone is welcome to join us for Care Packages. It’s a lot of fun. Our next Care Package packing day is January 14th. We arrive about 10:30 to start arranging the supplies and start packing shortly after that. It takes about an hour to finish.
We had to say farewell to Becky Nazarrenus last month. She has moved to Nevada and will be missed. She has been a huge help no only on Care Package day but also making Pocket Flags for the boxes, picking up salsa from Bullocks each month, and she had her job down pat on Care Package day. Last month it took 2 of us to do what she did herself. So, thank you Becky for your years of service. I already miss you.
CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
We are still collecting used cell phones. These are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.
