Auxiliary Vice President- Linda Nenno
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. The Auxiliary had busy month. The “Angel Tree” went up on November 1st . We put 30 tags on the tree and within three days, they had all been pulled. The back room is filling up with presents for these children. We will have a “wrapping” party on December 11th at noon. Bring your extra wrapping paper and come join the fun.
The Auxiliary prepared meals for the Veterans twice this month. As always, they enjoyed the meal, the company and most of all the music.
We held our annual bake sale at the Veteran’s Day Car Show. We were blessed with beautiful weather and generous customers. We had five tables filled with baked goods and raised $1057 for the Veteran’s Home. That is a record that will be hard to beat! Thank you to the ALA and VFW members who baked for and worked the bake sale.
We had a table at the Craft show on November 22. Many Auxiliary members made items to include on our table. We had potholders, aprons, hats, scarves, bath salts and more. We made $798 on this sale and will take what items are left to the Post for the sale on the 29th. Our goal is $1000, so I hope we have another good day.
We have begun collecting non-perishables for food baskets for needy families, for Christmas. Please help us where you can. Many items are on sale right now, so pick up a couple extra when you’re doing your grocery shopping. The Sons of the American Legion gave us $200 to buy turkeys for these baskets, and the Charity committee gave us another $200 to fill in where needed. Thank you to both for your generosity.
December looks to be another busy month, with baking for care packages, cookie trays for teachers and the Veteran’s Home and Pecan Pie muffins for the Luminaria Walk. Please help where you can. We also need more volunteers to sign up to serve at the Luminaria Walk and to bake the mini-muffins. If you need the recipe for the muffins, please email me at xsklmrm@msn.com or call me at 575-642-6164. Better plan on making an extra batch to keep. They are so-o-o good and very easy to make. You can deliver them to the Post on Friday, 12/11 or Saturday when you come to breakfast.

Auxiliary Membership Report-Linda Nenno
Thank you to those who have renewed for 2015. The dues are still $30/year, and help us continue the programs that serve Veterans and their families. Membership is our most important program, since without members, we cease to exist. Tell your non-member friends about us, what we do and encourage them to join if they are eligible. Carry a membership application in your purse. You, as a member, know we have some really good things going on at the Post, and we always have a lot of fun, so spread the word. As of November 20, we have 288 paid members, which puts us at 69% of our final goal. This time last year we were at 320, so we need to get those renewals in soon. Remember, door cards change January 1, 2015 and you will not be able to get a new one without a 2015 card. Ginny Lucero and I will both be out of town from 12/20/14-through 1/3/15, so if you don’t renew by December 20, you will have to wait until we return to get your new card.

Care Packages and Cell Phones: Marty Novak
We sent 24 Care Packages in November. Thanks to all who came to help pack.
These Care Packages mean so much to the Troops who receive them especially at Christmas time. Thanks to our American Legion Family for the help and support they give us, to the members, non-members, groups, organizations, and businesses of our community for their monetary donations and donations of supplies to help us keep this project going. Thank you all. We are working hard to keep this project going. So if you can help with any donation, it will be much appreciated.
Anyone is welcome to join us for Care Packages. It’s a lot of fun. Our next Care Package packing day is December 10th. We arrive about 10:30 to start arranging the supplies and start packing shortly after that. It takes about an hour to finish. These will be our special Christmas packages with homemade cookies and candies and candy canes. If you plan to contribute cookies and/or candies to the packages, keep in mind that they must be items that travel well and packed 2 or 3 to a package…snack or sandwich size plastic bag that can be sealed.
CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
We are still collecting used cell phones. These are sent for recycling and provide calling cards for our Troops. There is a collection container in the entry way of the Post.
What is a Veteran: A Veteran…whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve…is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount of “up to, and including his/her life.” That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that act..
