In Flanders Fields

PoppyLargeColorIn Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Each year, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers distribute approximately seven million red crepe paper poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans, current military and their families. The veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits for the veteran. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn by Americans to honor those who served and died for their county.

Honor their past sacrifices and contribute to the continuing needs of our veterans on May 25, 2013 from 9am – 1pm at BULLOCK’S and ALCO in TorC and at HODGES RESTAURANT, PAT’S SERVICE STATION, BUTTE GENERAL STORE, and CHISOLM’S CORNER STOP in Elephant Butte when members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 distribute bright red poppies.
